Bear Mountain Bridge The Bear Mountain Bridge is a toll suspension bridge in New York State, carrying US-6 and US-202 across the Hudson River, from Bear Mountain State Park (at the northern tip of Rockland) to the northwestern corner of Westchester. Walking across the Bear Mountain Bridge is an exciting short hike that offers spectacular scenic views and photograph opportunities. The walkway also takes the Appalachian Trail across the Hudson River offering a hiker the chance to say "I've walked a part of the Appalachian Trail." Hiking Perkins Point Perkins Drive, also known as Perkins Point and Perkins Memorial Tower, stands at the summit of Bear Mountain State Park, 1,305 feet above the Hudson River. The tower was completed in 1934 and dedicated to George Walbridge Perkins, the first President and widely regarded founder of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC). Perkins Memorial Tower, atop Bear Mountain, provides maps, history, and spectacular views of the park, the Hudson Highlands, and Harriman State Park. Several hikes are available at Perkins Drive, including a loop hike that climbs Bear Mountain and descends on the Appalachian Trail. The views on this hike are exceptional affording opportunities for excellent scenic photos. The Merry-Go-Round Pavilion provides a special attraction for children of all ages. Riding the carousel is among the top things children love to do; while parents stand by admiring the beautiful hand-painted scenes of the park while the merry-go-round itself features carved renditions of animals whose natural habitat is the Bear Mountain region.
