Harrier Hill Park City of Hudson, Columbia County Hudson River Valley, New York State This beautiful grassland offers splendid long-distance views of the Catskills and the Hudson River. These protected acres in Columbia County include meadows, wooded bluffs and a hay farm, all near the Stockport Flats Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve. Harrier Hill Park is maintained in cooperation with the Columbia Land Conservancy.
From Scenic Hudson: "After a morning browsing through Hudson's antiques shops, Harrier Hill offers the perfect counterpoint - nature at its most sublime. The park's location atop an open ridge makes it a standout for savoring vistas immortalized by Frederic Church, Thomas Cole and fellow painters in the Hudson River School. In fact, there's no better place to survey the rugged grandeur of the Catskill Mountains or the lordly river that flows before them. For a real treat, stick around for the sunset. In the park's pavilion, shaped like a corncrib in homage to the land's previous incarnation as a dairy farm, you can escape the sun, but keep your binoculars handy. The surrounding fields, also protected by Scenic Hudson, support a wide variety of birds - including the Northern harrier, the hawk for which the park is named. Grasslands in the valley and elsewhere are vanishing at an alarming rate, eliminating essential bird habitat. Here's one meadow where our feathered friends will always be welcome."
Cross Country Skiing Snowshoeing A short, universally accessible trail leads from the parking area past a farm pond to the pavilion. The 2-mile Stockport-Greenport Trail, which traverses a dramatic ravine, connects with additional hiking opportunities in the Greenport Conservation Area.
